Pectinidae – Chlamydinae: Mimachlamys asperrima (Lamarck, 1819) (‘doughboy scallop’)

Synonym(s): asperrima Lamarck, 1819.

Typical shell-length 90 mm. Juvenile shells may be orange, yellow or purple, but most adult shells are purplish brown. Often sponge-encrusted. Lives subtidally and offshore in crevices amongst rocks and seaweed. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread and common species.
